This grass was first installed in June 2024. It was brand-new Empire Zoysia, and it looked beautiful in 2024. I honestly don't know what grass we had before. But I'm almost sure it was Centipede. But in 2025? I wanted to cry. 😭 All of 2025, my grass looked like the first photo. I could not figure out what I had done wrong. It had been so lush and green the year before. After spending over $5,000 for a yard full of new grass, I was starting to wonder if we had been scammed. First of all, I never even wanted Zoysia. I wanted new Centipede because I’ve had Centipede my whole life. But every landscaper who gave us a quote told us not to get Centipede. They all recommended Zoysia because they said it helps keep weeds away and no one gets Centipede anymore🤔. So after visiting a few sod companies, I finally decided to go with the Zoysia. In 2025, I tried everything hoping the grass would turn green. Nothing worked. After doing tons of research, I decided to dethatch it because the grass looked white in some areas. I was convinced there was a thick thatch buildup from 2024. So I purchased a dethatcher from Amazon and went to work. It was September, so I already knew summer was basically over and the grass probably wasn’t going to turn green that year. But I wanted to be ready for Spring/Summer 2026. It took me at least 4 days to dethatch the entire front yard. I'm sure some of you all remember the video i posted of all the dead grass I pulled up. There were bags and bags of dead grass!! It was so much work, but I got it done. And that is why my yard is so beautiful in 2026. There was a thick layer of dead grass (thatch) that needed to be removed so the soil could get sunlight, water, and nutrients from the fertilizers. I told a few people that 2026 would be the year I went harder in my yard than I ever have. I could hardly wait till Spring got here! I had my boots and gloves sitting by the garage door! 😂. I'm definitely addicted to yard work. I be so excited to go out in my yard.....like a kid at recess. No one ever believes me when I tell them I do all my yard work. They be like 🤔😲🫢 🌱. But my neighbors can tell you how I'm in those trenches...almost daily. #Zoysia
