The Bloomberg Terminal costs around $24,000 per user per year and runs on a custom keyboard with colored keys you won't find anywhere else. And the big GO button that drives the whole interface. And the screen looks like it's from 1995, but it's got around 350,000 people that pay almost $10 billion a year for it. Approximately 350,000 users times $24,000 per user per year. Bloomberg Terminal churn is approximately zero. And nobody ever switches. Michael Bloomberg launched the terminal in 1982 after getting pushed out of Salomon Brothers. The product bundles market data, news, analytics, everything you need to know around the markets into one DOS-looking interface with yellow keys and red for equity desk, go. And gets a description page for Apple without ever touching a mouse. And the whole thing is that the dated UI actually isn't laziness, it's the moat. A trader who's been on Bloomberg for 10 years moves through normal data sets faster than any modern interface could let them. The keyboard layout and commands are pretty much wired into their hands. So, really, really awesome story in designing your own moat. Bloomberg keeps the surface stable and adds features behind existing commands and they figured out customer lock-in before lock-in was even a tech word. So, really, really awesome story.
