Here are the five things I refuse to spend money on in 2026. Sorry, not sorry. I'm Tyler. I'm a former financial advisor and portfolio manager. Now I make financial content for free so you don't have to pay for it. Number one, tipping a screen. I've said it before and I'll say it again. A tip prompt for handing me a muffin is not a tip prompt. It is an inflation surcharge with feelings. I tip generously for actual service. Sit down meals, haircuts, hotels, but I do not tip the iPad at an airport kiosk that has been swiveled around with three preset options starting at 22%. And before you come at me telling me an orange mocha Frappuccino is hard to make, I drink my coffee black. Number two, new clothes. I rewear the same five outfits like I'm a Pixar movie. The capsule wardrobe is the most underrated wealth strategy in the modern era. Nobody in this world is thinking of anyone other than themselves for 99.9% of their lives. So wear what you want and save thousands. Number three, alcohol. I'm not on a soapbox. Been there, done that. The math just stopped working for me. A four pack of decent craft beer over 15 bucks. Restaurant cocktails at 20 bucks. The pour of wine at dinner is the cost of an entire bottle at the store. I drink occasionally, just no longer paying 80 bucks for the privilege of feeling crappy the next day. Number four, extended warranties on anything. Appliances, electronics, cars. They are the single most profitable product line for the companies selling them. Which tells you everything you need to know. The math in aggregate never favors the buyer. So buy quality items and self-insure. And number five, subscription boxes. Monthly mystery box of skincare products, socks, or curated lifestyle goods is just a recurring charge to feel something on the second Thursday of each month. I feel like we've reached a new consumer low if we're now paying a premium for a box to be delivered of things we don't know and didn't order. And if any of this is helpful, sign up for my free weekly newsletter by clicking the link in my bio and each week I'll send you over another money playbook that actually works.
