People think VCs bet on ideas. We don't. We bet on people. After 15 years and over 150 companies backed, I look for 7 things. #1 VISION. Not I want to make a billion dollars. Really a problem they can't stop thinking about. Because if your vision is just to make money, you've already failed. #2 DOMAIN EXPERTISE. Two, have they done the reps? Have they built inside another company in the space or sold to the same customer for years? I want founders walking in with an unfair advantage. #3 OBSESSIVE. Obsessive gets a bad rap, but these are the founders who text me at 11 PM and ask for interest after we sign. I'm not happy unless they're asking for things that I didn't offer. #4 CAN SELL. They need to get inside the customer's head. Make the customer feel seen, and then they can sell them anything. #6 CAN PIVOT. The first idea is almost always wrong. I've watched founders rebuild a product in 9 days after the users told them their first version sucked. That's the moment they'd make it. #7 I LIKE THEM. Seven, do I actually like them? I'm going to be in board meetings with them until 2036. If I don't, I should never have written a check in the first place. That's the 7. Most founders have two or three of these. The best ones have almost all 7. Follow along for more founder education content.
