There's a free Microsoft tool that helps you cut down your Claude token usage by up to 70% because every time you upload a PDF, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, images, audio, HTML, text-based formats, ZIP files, YouTube URLs, EPUBs, and more documents, it might cost you up your context window. But if you turn it into a Markdown file, for example, like this, this type of format is delicious for LLMs to ingest because it understands it very well as opposed to a very clunky PDF with lots of images. So if they can't ingest it properly, it won't be able to give you a good answer. So you convert it into a Markdown file, it's very easy for any LLM to ingest this. So Microsoft created a free tool called MarkitDown. It's got 161,000 stars on GitHub. Also comes with an MPC integration, so you can have this in Claude automatically. So the files get converted into Markdown before Claude even processes it.
