Capitalist or socialist? Can I respectfully decline? Theory in general, as I see it, has a hole in it. The Rentier Black Hole. That is my focus. The finest theorists of free-market capital could not run a fund in reality. My own experience of startups was anything but textbook capitalism, and it certainly was not socialism. It was mostly chaos. And the evidence is fairly clear. On HDI, mixed economies do particularly well. Neither pure pole wins, both have had historically ugly results for the average person. I am not here to be an ideologue. I am here to follow good ideas wherever they come from, follow the evidence where it leads, and get at the root causes of why both, in the combination we run now, are not delivering the results we all want. So I am not really a capitalist. I am not really a socialist. I am an applied economist. A diagnostician, looking for the hole in the theory. I think I have found it.
