Why Nvidia doesn't offer employees free lunch. If you work there, don't expect free lunch. Former Nvidia employees told Business Insider's Jeff Weiss that cafeteria meals are subsidized, not free. Coffee is complimentary, but many drinks and cafe items cost money. And they say that's by design. While Silicon Valley became known for free meals, lavish gyms, and other office perks, one former employee told Business Insider that being frugal is deeply rooted in Nvidia's DNA. They say CEO Jensen Huang believes that work and pleasure should stay separate. Rather than giving perks to keep employees in the office longer, the focus is on giving workers flexibility to do life's work. And that philosophy extends beyond the cafeteria. Former employees say that Nvidia vice presidents fly economy, and their executives don't have executive assistants, reflecting what they describe as the company's one team culture. And paying for lunch actually isn't an issue for some employees. One former employee told Business Insider that there was so much exciting work happening that food would be your last concern.
