Before you buy any azelaic acid product, you may wanna watch this. Not all azelaic acid products work the same. Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid found in grains like wheat and barley. In dermatology, it is a highly regarded topical treatment prized for its ability to clear acne, fade hyperpigmentation, and reduce the redness and inflammation associated with rosacea. Azelaic Acid is one of my all time favourite skincare ingredients. It's anti-inflammatory and it can help with acne, post acne marks, redness, even exfoliating a little bit. Here's the catch. I will split azelaic acid into two camps. First, Azelaic Acid "Focused" products. This is what I would call azelaic acid "focused" products. Think prescription products like Skinoren or one of my favourites Kiso Care. These are usually around 15% or higher concentration, and they have proven delivery systems with the right pH to maximize absorption. These gave me the best results: acne control, reducing redness, improves / brightens skin texture overall because it does help to exfoliate a little bit. But the downside is that it can be quite itchy and irritating, especially if you're a beginner. And then you have the Korean approach. K-Beauty Azelaic Acid. These usually exist around ~10% concentration or below. And instead of relying on high strength azelaic acid, they pair it with soothing ingredients like centella. So these help with calming irritation and reducing redness with the synergistic effect with centella. And this one with kojic acid helps to target more of that brightening of dark spots. Personally, these are very, very gentle compared to the high strength ones. But I don't see the acne improving and skin texture improving results with these. So before you buy your next azelaic acid product, ask yourself what you're actually trying to target and treat. Because the same ingredient in different formulas is gonna give you very, very, very different results.
