tips i would give my younger self to thrive in corporate america
✨
(as a 23 year old first-gen Pakistani who works in consulting)
1. Work smart not hard. Corporate is not like school.
You don't get rewarded just because you stayed up late, overworked yourself, or tried to be the "perfect student."
Learn what actually matters, prioritize high-impact work, communicate clearly, and stop chasing academic validation in a workplace.
2. Find people that have your back. You need mentors, sponsors, peers, and allies.
Especially people who will give you honest advice, help you navigate the politics, and speak highly of you when you're not in the room.
Your work matters but relationships matter too.
3. Ask GOOD questions. Asking thoughtful questions shows that you're curious, engaged, and actually trying to learn.
Don't be afraid of looking inexperienced. The right questions can make you look more strategic, not less capable.
4. Detach your emotions from the work.
A job is JUST A job.
Don't stress yourself over things you can't control. Do your work and log off - this is NOT your whole life so don't give this much mental energy
5. You can be ambitious without sacrificing your peace.
Learn the game, build your support system, protect your energy, and remember who you are outside of work. 🙏
