looking back at my first post grad job I worked three years in management consulting even though I felt very self assured there are definitely things that I got wrong and this is the first list if we haven't met already my name is Yassi I work in media tech strategy and operations and I like to make videos about things I learn in career and life as I learn them so follow for more videos like this we're gonna get more consulting specific as we go down the list but without further ado number one I used to think that all feedback is a gift and anything someone says about my professional skills is something I should internalize over time I learned that feedback is a gift but it must be taken with a grain of salt by default I always assume the person speaking to me has good intentions for my development however there are circumstances where the other person might not be properly trained to give good feedback or they are caught up in their own troubles and are not clear minded enough to give you something that is actually actionable number two this probably comes from my immigrant and student mindset I always thought that I can win the trust of leadership with my good work I don't need to be as concerned with the fact that maybe we don't have that much in common or our personalities don't mesh in reality I've realized that good work is a solid foundation for trust and genuine relationships in the workplace however many many other factors that sometimes are outside of our control kinda contribute to it so you should also be strategic about what kind of people you try to win the trust of who are the people who will form an alliance with you and will lift you up when the opportunities arise number three in consulting and maybe also accounting there is a concept of being on the beach or the bench basically not being utilized on a billable client project when I was a fresh grad my firm told me that it's totally okay and when you're on the beach just do trainings and network with people but if I were to go back I would have just a little bit more urgency to get myself staffed on projects even though I think at the time I was trying my best not to make anyone anxious or nervous I don't think work at the end of the day is that serious but I'm just being honest having low utilization oftentimes reflects in your performance and skill development in industries like consulting where your skill development is literally evaluated month to month the gap can form pretty quickly that's all for this video let me know if you can relate to any of these I really hope so and stay tuned for the next one
