This is a brilliant question. Why do I sketch in blue? And this isn't just traditional. I often sketch in blue or other colors digitally as well. When traditionally, I sketch with a colored marker or a colored pencil. There are many reasons why an artist might choose to do this, but one of the main reasons is that it creates a nice contrast to the line way. This way, I can use it as a guideline when lining, but it won't be too much of a distraction. I can still make creative decisions when lining but restricted by the sketch. One of the reasons I might sketch in color like this is how it looks. The sketch stage is no longer a stage I'm ignoring. I'm now incorporating it in the final piece. But because it's a different line color to the line art, it doesn't distract from the piece. If I end up deciding to color the piece, the colored sketch adds a really nice undertone to the piece. Sometimes I also line in colored pencil. This creates a slightly different effect, especially when the line color is similar to the sketch color. Back then, I used to find the sketching stage of drawing the most tedious, annoying part to get through. Now, sketching is one of my favorite stages of drawing to the point that I leave a lot of my pieces just because I like the sketch. There's nothing wrong in sketching any other way. This is just my preference as an artist.
