TW OPINION!! Downplaying somebody's sensory issues as the reason for shaving because you wanna be right and morally superior in your argument is ableist. I've been seeing a lot of online discourse about the reasons for why women shave and the main argument is that women don't shave and it's solely because of the patriarchy. While I do agree is deeply rooted in the patriarchy, there has been a point brought up that women (ESPECIALLY disabled women) shave because they have sensory issues the way hair feels on their body. This has been argued against with sayings such as "If you don't shave" "then you don't have sensory" "issues," and I fear that's not how it works. As someone who is on the spectrum with sensory issues, head hair and body hair feel VERY DIFFERENT. The hair on my head is soft doesn't bother me as much. On top of that, if my hair is bothering me in a ponytail and forget about it. It stays off my neck and I can leave it be. Body hair is more coarse and rough which is uncomfortable, especially when I can feel it with my hands. You can't just put your body hair up and forget about it. Your only options are to leave it be and suffer, or to shave to offer some sort of relief. Now, there are people out there who do shave their heads sensory issues, but everyone's sensory issues are DIFFERENT. Telling someone that "if they shave their legs" "but don't shave their head" "don't have sensory issues" IS ABLEISM. You are disregarding someone's disability because it doesn't fit YOUR criteria Maybe instead of attacking someone for the reasons they shave mind your own business.
