Have you ever read a book that is so good you're almost afraid to talk about it because you genuinely don't think you could possibly have the words to do it justice? Because that is how I have felt ever since I finished Sunburn by Chloe Michelle Howarth. This is one of the best books I've ever read in my entire life. The writing in this book, not a single word is wasted prose. So beautiful, so stunning. Literally, I could eat it. I could feast on every sentence of this book and still long for more. This is a coming of age story set in the 1990s in a small, conservative, rural Catholic town in Ireland. And it's about Lucy, this teenage girl who is coming to the realisation that an infatuation she has with one of the girls in her friend group is actually a crush. And I have never read a book that has captured the feelings of longing and yearning and angst as a teenage girl the way this book has. And you add on top of it, she's falling in love with another girl. And she's trying to navigate this relationship, will also try to maintain her family and maintain her good standing in this community. And you feel this insecurity and tension and confusion for her, for the entire book. And it was so palpable that sometimes I want to crawl inside of it and just shake times. And other times I want to crawl inside of this book and just sit, hold her and tell her that everything is going to be okay. This is such an emotional book. I think when I finished it, I went upstairs and I laid on my bed and just stared at the ceiling because I'd never read anything was girlhood and first love and first crushes with the tenderness that this one did, but also the pain that this one did. If you took the song Good Luck Babe by Chappell Roan and you wrote a book with it, you would get Sunburn, and it would be one of the best books you've ever read. This is a six star book, highly, highly recommend. I don't I've really words.
