5 more books for your summer tbr if you want something that’s not a typical romance. The first book I’m gonna add is The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller. This book is set lakeside in the backwoods of Cape Cod and this story captures a 24-hour day that Elle spends with her husband and kids at her family cabin after she shares a forbidden kiss with her childhood friend and uncorks multiple decades worth of memories that Elle has growing up coming to this family cabin and all of the secrets and traumas that she has buried here. It’s a very layered, complex, emotional story with the perfect summer setting. And then I have God of the Woods by Liz Moore because it is literally set at a summer camp in upstate New York in the 1970s where a young girl, El Van Leer, the daughter of the wealthy Van Leer family who own the summer camp, goes missing from the same place that her brother went missing from a decade before her. And as the mystery of what happened to L unfolds, so does the mystery surrounding her brother's disappearance and multiple secrets and tension in history between the wealthy Van Leer family and this blue collar town surrounding them. Then I'm gonna add Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall. This book takes place in a small farming village in the English countryside and it revolves around a murder trial that is taking place that involves local woman Beth, her husband Frank, and her first love Gabriel. And the trial so between Beth, Gabriel, and Frank, the secret that Beth has been keeping since Gabriel disappeared over a decade ago. Highly recommend, I bought it for four other people after I finished it. And then for my thriller lovers, I have to add The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley because it takes place at a luxury hotel on the coast during their midsummer celebration. During which a fire breaks out, a body is found, and this all begins to unravel another mystery that occurred in this same place 15 years prior. We are getting multiple perspectives and multiple timelines from different guests and employees and townspeople who were involved in the celebration and we slowly begin to thread together how they've all connected. I've loved all of Lucy Foley's books, but I do think this is my favorite one for summer and I do think it's the best one for summer. Then I'm gonna add The Burning Side by Sarah Damoff. Really, I'll use any excuse to try and get you to read a book by Sarah Damoff, but this one does take place across a scorching hot summer in Texas. This story is about the summer that April and Leo have to move back in with April's parents after they experienced a house fire while they're navigating a crossroads in their marriage and her parents are navigating a very tricky transition within their own marriage. I just think Damoff captures families in such a raw, real, honest way when you don't always agree with the decisions that her characters make, you can always understand and empathize with them. Highly, highly recommend it. I just suggest you have tissues on hand. So there you have it. Five more books for your summer TBR that aren't your typical romance.
