I don’t use bats anymore after learning in Korea with Master Lee Hyang-gu. Simply because he showed me that, with the right technique, you don’t need them. I throw with very little water, and when I lift the pot from the wheel, I place my fingers where I’ll later carve the foot. That means if there’s any slight distortion (there was a little on this one), it’s in the area that gets trimmed away anyway, so it doesn’t affect the final silhouette. I’m still nowhere near Master Lee Hyang-gu’s level

If I’m honest, I never really enjoyed using bats. I mostly relied on them because my technique wasn’t good enough to throw without them, especially with larger pieces. I may still use them occasionally, but I like knowing I don’t need to. It’s one less step, and I enjoy the simplicity and efficiency of working this way. #ceramics #moonjar #pottery #wheelthrowing
