I just saw that Phia, the shopping app founded by Bill Gates' daughter Phoebe, has apparently been claiming sales commissions for sales it did not generate. Basically, if you buy a pair of pants from Gap, trouble for just last year. The funniest part is most times there are no available coupons to use, but they get credit anyway. Why do Phia and other coupon apps do this? Simple. They have no clue how to generate demand on their app, their revenue is predicted on other apps and publishers to do the hard work to get the user to a checkout so that Phia can claim commission on a sale they had nothing to do with. Because you saw an ad on Google, Google usually gets a small sales commission for driving that sale. But if you were using Phia during checkout, they would do some URL and referral code magic to basically insert themselves as the refer, which means it could then collect a commission on a sale they had nothing to do with. Now they say that this issue has been resolved for now. But even if that's the case, they've already raised $35 million based on the assumption that they were building an actual business instead of stealing from other ones. And this is why this story stinks, because my last name didn't give me the opportunity to raise millions of dollars as the first person in my family to work in corporate. I moved to New York City with a suitcase and slept in an attic while I was getting my start. And while other "firsts" like me have had to build an unbelievable amount of trust in order to get an opportunity to build a business like this.
