Charlie Eriksen, a security researcher at Aikido Security, who reviewed the findings, said it was unclear if the company's "archive" feature even existed in the codebase, and question why it was ever implemented, but they have no right to do any such thing under their own privacy policy, he said. "I've seen quite a few messed up things in my career. This one must be among some of the crazier things." Bloomberg retested Phia's browser extension after reaching out to the company on July 7 and found it had stopped automatically claiming a referral click in all the cases where it previously had been. Bloomberg just reported that Phia, the AI shopping app that Time called one of the best inventions of 2025, even though it was alleged that this might have been a stolen idea, has been claiming credit for online sales that it didn't actually drive. There was a whistleblower involved here, somebody who worked for Phia or was involved in the app in some way, who told a Bloomberg reporter that Phia was basically faking a lot of the commissions and the sales reporting to investors. Phia has raised a ton of money, not necessarily from the normal institutional backers that you see in a normal startup ecosystem, but from celebrities like Sydney Sweeney and Halsey and Khloe Kardashian and people who aren't necessarily going to, like, press you on proof that you're selling as much as you say you're selling. And Phoebe Gates has been everywhere. She's on podcasts, she's with Kara Swisher. I saw her for the first time on Watch What Happens Live, and there was this really awkward interaction where she made it very clear to Andy that she thought her dad was ugly. Right. You know what? She's Bill Gates' daughter for a reason. Hopefully we don't look too much alike. Oh my god. This is not the first time Phia has gotten in trouble for flouting rules and regulations. Back in November, Fortune exposed that Phia was actually stealing sensitive user data by taking screenshots of whatever they were browsing. So that could be bank statements, it could be email histories or chat logs. A security expert called the breach one of the most messed up things he had ever seen. Phia as a company says there's no problem with their behavior, but after Fortune and Bloomberg exposed them, they stopped doing it.
