"Is my house plant ready to be repotted?"

Is my house plant ready to be repotted? I get asked often, how do I know when my house plant is ready to be repotted? And sometimes, it's a little obvious, like the snake plant. This is my husband's snake plant and he's had this plant for quite a while. It sits in his office actually in the window and I think that's why it's grown so much over time. But unfortunately, it's still in the same soil as when we first got it. You can see there's really not much soil left to this poor snake plant. She is quite hydrophobic. What does hydrophobic mean, you may ask? Hydrophobic soil is old or extremely dry soil that repels water instead of absorbing it. So in here, the soil is very, very old and the plant is not absorbing the nutrients anymore. So it's officially time to change this out. Now, when you want to repot your house plant, for example, this was in a four inch nursery pot and we're going to be putting it in a six inch nursery pot now. It's a good rule of thumb, whenever you repotting your house plant, majority of the time, you're going to repot in something that is one to two inches larger than what it's currently in. Now, I know this looks like a mighty big difference between the two, but don't worry, your house plant is going to make itself nice and cozy in its new home. I know a lot of the times people get worried or stressed when they have to repot their house plant, and I totally get it. I dislike having to repot anything that trails, like pothos or scindapsus. All their vines get in the way and it drives me bananas. Repotting a snake plant is so easy. We're going to go ahead and do is plop some soil in here and then we're going to be done. A lot of the times when people repot their house plants, they don't really know how much water to give the plant now that it's in fresh soil. My advice to you is just soak it. You're going to give this plant as much water as you can. And sometimes it's going to be a little messy because the soil hasn't actually settled yet. So it's completely normal for it to pull up at the top like this, but don't worry, over time it will settle nicely. And just like that, our house plant is ready to go back to its home.
