On January 15th, 1947, a woman with her child were walking in an undeveloped area in Los Angeles. It was when she noticed something very strange. On an empty lot, the woman saw from a distance what looks to be a mannequin. A pale white with black hair, severed in two pieces, placed in a way that made it look like somebody who placed it there was performing sexual acts on it. As she got closer, she made a horrifying discovery. That was not a mannequin. That was a human being. That was a woman. The body was severed exactly in two pieces. The body was completely drained of blood, which left her skin pallid white, hence giving the effect that it looks like a mannequin from a distance. The face had been slashed from the corners of her mouth to her ears, giving the effect of the Glasgow smile. She had several cuts to her thigh and breasts where entire portions of flesh have been sliced away. The body was placed there deliberately. The killer intentionally put both halves of her body from the waist up, just mere inches away from each other. Her intestines were tucked neatly behind her buttocks. And this is the part that gets twisted. Her hands were positioned above overhead, meaning her entire arms were raised. Her elbows bent at right angles with her legs spread apart. There was zero blood on the scene. This indicates a lot of things. No. 1, that the killer most likely had anatomical knowledge or some butchering technique. The killer most likely washed the body completely. This could take up to several hours. The body was not only washed clean, it was essentially sucked off of its blood completely. I want you to imagine a human being without any blood. What's also very important to note is that the body was cut completely in half from the waist down, done through a technique that was taught in the 1930s called hemichorpirectomy. The woman immediately realised something was horribly wrong and called the police. Police and investigators quickly rushed to the crime scene. They quickly concluded that the woman had most likely been dead for no more than 10 hours, placing her death at somewhere between midnight. They also quickly identified the woman to be Elizabeth Short. Elizabeth Short was only 22 years old and moved to Los Angeles for a better life. Then she disappeared. Most likely when she disappeared, she was killed elsewhere. Then the killer transported her body and placed it there deliberately, somewhere in the pitch darkness of the night. With the level of extreme violence and extremely deeply calculated and disturbing method of murder suggested that the killer or killers most definitely took their time and they wanted the body to be discovered. Hence why it was discovered on an empty lot. Also because there was virtually no blood at the scene whatsoever. That is what makes it so disturbing. Police launched the largest murder investigation in Los Angeles history, hundreds of people were questioned and many wrongfully confessed, which is unusual. Unfortunately, none of the evidence was sufficient enough to identify the killer. Hence, the killer was never found. 80 years later, no one has ever been convicted. The tragedy of Elizabeth Short earned her the nickname The Black Delia. But behind that famous nickname, the world knows was a woman whose life was cut short and she was violently killed, and whose murder case remains one of the most haunting unsolved cases in history.
