Here are three financial sacrifices that I made in my early 20s that I stand 10 toes down for in 2026 1. I didn't travel a lot for a few years post-grad I did not travel a lot after college it just was not a priority for me traveling can be very expensive especially when you're on a limited income I just didn't want to be spending thousands of dollars on flights and hotels when I was getting situated as an adult so building my emergency fund paying down debt 2. I had lots of roommates and didn't live in fancy places so I could save on rent number two is I lived in crappy apartments and I had roommates for six years in my first apartment I lived in basically a glorified closet in my second apartment I had three other roommates and we shared one bathroom and then I did a short stint living at home it wasn't until I was 27 turning 28 that I moved into my own apartment by myself and even still at that time I made some sacrifices on amenities that I had and the location so that I could keep my rent expense a little bit lower your housing expense is always gonna be your biggest expense so keep it as low as possible for as long as possible because once it goes up it's really hard to bring it back down 3. I didn't invest in my clothes or appearance number three is I really didn't spend a lot of money investing in my appearance or buying clothes I went a few years with getting haircuts at Supercuts I didn't dye my hair for a while I shopped at places like Primark and Old Navy and while I definitely think there's a specific time and place for that kind of era I have absolutely no regrets because as I've gotten older I've really been able to figure out my style I'm really glad that I didn't end up wasting a bunch of money back in the day on clothes and on things that I wouldn't end up wearing or using now what I wanna emphasize is sacrifice = trade off you make for a *defined period of time* aka not forever! a financial sacrifice is a trade off that you make for a defined period of time to improve your financial position in the future it is not something that you have to do forever it doesn't have to be so black and white but it's something that you are choosing not to have so that you can have more and better later on and on your own terms
