Here's the top 3 biggest financial mistakes I've made in my 20s so far. And I'm only 24... Number one, overspending on socializing. I spent way too much money for the first time after graduating from college. And without budgeting it, I spent over $10,000 at bars and restaurants. Which is money I could have saved for a down payment on a home. Lesson: Spend money to have fun, don't over do it. Overdoing it is a great way to live paycheck to paycheck. Number two, not having an emergency fund or insurance. In 2020, I was a month away from graduating when my dog was hit by a motorcycle on a walk with a friend. He survived, but I was basically broke and had no pet insurance. His legs snapped in half and the surgery plus overnight stay cost over $8,000. I managed to raise $4,000 from friends and family, but I had to put the other $4,000 on an interest-free credit card. So I highly suggest taking the time to save an emergency fund or get insurance on the things you love. Number three, overspending on housing. My second apartment after college cost almost $2,000 a month after utilities. Now, if you're from an expensive part of the country, that might not sound like a lot for a one bedroom, but in Houston, I could have easily spent $1,400 for a cheaper place. Or I could have gotten a roommate and spent around $1,000 to $1,100 a month. So the lesson I've learned from all of this is don't ball out just because you can. Stack it up instead. Try and save and invest as much as you can in your early 20s.
