here are a few ways that I have reduced consumption noise in my life so that I can actually focus on buying less and buying better. Consumption noise: The feeling of constantly wanting or needing to buy something, usually to fill some sort of void in your life. It's often triggered by scrolling on social media & seeing all the things you don't have. Consumption noise is the feeling of constantly wanting or needing to buy new things. It's usually triggered by external stimuli, most notably scrolling on Instagram and TikTok. Guilty and I have been on my buy less, buy better journey for about two years. So I have really been focused on being more intentional, not only about the things that I am consuming, but also how much I am consuming in general. So here are four things that I have edited in my life to get rid of that constant consumption noise. Number one is that I unfollow and I unsubscribe literally every single day. If I notice that an influencer is only posting links, immediate unfollow. Same goes for marketing emails. If I do buy something and I start to get inundated with emails from the brand, not only am I unsubscribing, but I'm also blocking. I do not need to be reminded about all of the things that I don't have every single day. Number two is that I declutter my space all the time when it comes to my clothes specifically. I stick to a one in one out rule. So if I do buy something, something else has to go. I have a set number of hangers in my closet and I'm not adding more. But beyond that, in my home, I just don't wanna accumulate things. So if something isn't serving a purpose, I either donate it, give it to a friend, or get rid of it. And maybe this is just because I've moved so many times, but the thought of having so much stuff freaks me out. Number three is that I have started to pick up more hobbies. And I will caveat this with, just because you're doing more hobbies doesn't mean you're not spending money because a lot of times hobbies can be expensive, especially the ones that I choose. Like I'm doing ceramics and weightlifting and needle pointing. I need to find a free hobby. But if you find you are spending a lot of time scrolling, you probably just need to replace that time with something else that's going to stimulate your brain. Ideally a hobby that keeps your hands busy so you're not on your phone. And number four is that I keep a wish list. I literally keep a running list in my phone of all of the things that I see that I want. And same goes for when I'm just existing in my life, you know, if I'm getting dressed and I wish I had X, Y, Z, I will make sure it gets added to my wish list. That way when I do go shopping, I'm only buying things that I've already identified that I want. You are 100% responsible for what you consume. So if you are having an internal problem with it, you have to look at your habits.
