After 10 years of teaching, I can tell you that this is correct. Every August, I don't care if a student knows all of their letters, if they can read, that does not matter to me. I'm watching to see if they can ask for help, if they can solve a problem. If they can handle hearing not yet. Can they follow a two-step direction? The letters, the sounds, the numbers, the reading, that is my job. The article states that the number one thing that teachers look for at the beginning of the school year is emotional regulation. If you're spending your summer drilling flashcards, I encourage you to do this instead. Play board games, practice independence, and have conversations with your child. That's all. Love ya.
