I am alarmed and frankly disgusted at the comments on this video I made about LGBTQ+ related topics on Encarta 96. I was just replying to somebody who asked me to look up a couple of terms and there are so many bigoted comments on this video. I'm turning the comments off after I post this. I'm blocking everybody who says stuff like this. And because so many people who are saying hateful things are following me, it's been a little bit of a wake-up call and I wanted to talk about nostalgic/retro account and what that can cultivate. I've been warned about this essentially and I've also seen a lot of discourse about the influx of nostalgic content online and what it's being weaponized for. In a lot of cases, you can see examples of this by the official White House page, they constantly weaponize nostalgia. That type of content can attract an audience who solely want that content because they want to go back. They want to be 10 years old again where they didn't know anything about society, they didn't think anything about the things that disturb them now, existed back then. AI video is being used for this purpose. There are a lot of nostalgia slap accounts, there are a lot of nostalgia bait accounts that don't really have much substance, they just post slideshows of brands that don't exist anymore, toys from the 90s. You might have read the comments on that, whether it be on TikTok or especially places like Twitter. Even if the comments aren't explicitly racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, etcetera, the comments usually allude to going back to that simpler time and how everything was better and that they wish it could be the 80s or the 90s. It used to be, let's go back to the 50s, the 50s were glorious. You can also find a ton of comments like that on YouTube under old songs. People aren't just celebrating the fashion, the trends, the music, the movies, toys from the 90s, for what they were and their memories that they associate with them. They are trying to make this broader commentary on how society has changed and what we have lost because of marginalized people. I want to make something clear. The Patrick Nagel prints, Windows 98, video games, 64 games, whatever. None of that is meant to signal that I want us to return to how society was structured in the 80s and 90s. And if you think that the cause of society's woes is gay people, trans people, please unfollow me. Please unfollow me and never consume my content again. That is not something that I want to cultivate on my account. I do not want you to interact with me. If you say things like this, please get out of my comments, unfollow me, block me even. I do not want you to be associated with or interacting with.
