Replying to @playthisatthefuneral just to paint a picture of the time I'm discussing (or right before it) since it's a murky and subjective era. I'm sure some people totally got rid of their VCR by the early 2000s in favor of a DVD player, but a lot of these things hung on more than we personally might recall. Later on, a lot of my friends got smartphones several years before I did. I used my 3rd gen iPod Nano until 2017 (when I stopped buying music on iTunes!)
