Rattlesnake Calathea

Rattlesnake Calathea (Goeppertia insignis) is the Plant of the Day! Welcome to Plantasia. My home and 405 houseplants. Every day I introduce you to one of those plants in order. And if you follow along, you might learn something about each one. Let's go. The plant of the day for Wednesday is a rattlesnake calathea. Check out those leaves. Like all calatheas, it looks like these leaves were painted by an artist. I swear to me, this looks like a painting of a plant on a plant. It just blows my mind. They they all do, but this one, particularly. And check out the backs of these leaves. Look at that beautiful red color. This is one of my favorites. She's getting really, really big. It's kind of hard to get knitting needle down into her soil to check to see how thirsty she is because she is so compact in the pots. So I think she's either gonna have to have a bigger pot or I'm gonna have to divide her and make more than one plant. I don't want to do that, but also I don't have a lot of space here. Um, and there are a few other plants in the prayer plant family that I would like to add to my collection. And as you can see, we're getting a little bit crowded in this area. So I'm not sure. Yeah, that is the Goeppertia insignis. Um, they were reclassified to Goeppertia in 2012, but I think for me and for most people, they will always be calatheas. They do require a lot of humidity. I keep humidifiers running 24/7 and pure water. They don't like mineral buildup in their water. They don't like mineral buildup. Calatheas have thin leaves that don't hold a lot of water, so they have to have a lot of water in their environment. Um, in the rainforest floor, growing in leaf litter.
