When people become really rich, they basically fall into one of three groups. But only one of those groups ends up actually being happy. So what she decided to do was track what they all did after they got super rich. The very first group is the one that just travels or they basically just chill. This is what most people would think of as the FIRE group, Financial Independence, Retire Early. And oddly enough, this was actually the most miserable group. And then the second group of people are the ones that just kept working and climbing the corporate ladder. And this group, they weren't miserable, but they were classified as indifferent. Also weren't extremely happy. There's this great book that talks exactly about the problem of doing this. The last group focused on doing work that brought them purpose. Maybe they became teachers, artists, chefs. They called this group aquarium fish because she described them as swimming towards meaning. In my opinion, this is Coast FIRE. This is something that I actually recently achieved and resulted in me quitting my corporate job to take a year long sabbatical and figure out what I want to do with my life. I'm doing this with about $715,000 invested. The crazy part is that the average person could hit Coast FIRE by 30 with $140,000 invested. Simply because if you let $140,000 sit for 30 years, just getting normal market returns, even when you factor for inflation, you'd end up with $1.5 million at retirement. Which means that you could live off like $75,000 a year. Plus your social security, you'd basically have $100,000 a year salary. Which is plenty of money because the average person spends about $100,000 a month.
