If you're in your 20s, do these things right now to help set yourself up for life. If you do, you'll be so much further ahead than all your friends, it won't even be funny. First, you want to open a HYSA and save $1000 first, if you don't have one already, and start an emergency fund. If you're not sure which ones to pick, I just posted a video highlighting three top choices for 2026. Build that account up to $1,000 and that'll help cover any of the immediate small expenses that you have. And then once you're more established, build that to a three to six month's depending on your financial situation. After you've built out your emergency savings account, next is to hit your employer 401k match if you have one. It's essentially free money and it's part of your compensation package. It doesn't matter if you're working a minimum wage job or if you're working a full-time career, this is free money and you should absolutely utilize it. After you've hit your employer 401k match, the next step is to open a Roth IRA and fully max out your contributions. Don't forget to invest them because if you're just contributing to the IRA, it doesn't invest your money, it won't grow. It's the same thing as having it sit in a regular checking or savings account. If you're not sure what to invest in, go with index funds that cover a broad market. This can be something like a total market, international or an S&P 500 fund. These are great investments that have historically returns. The last step is to build a budget and start getting realistic about your spending. It's nice to be young and be able to spend money on whatever you want, but as you get older, you need to start wrapping that in and closely monitoring what you're spending and how much of it you're doing.
