Mexican drug cartels

Mexican drug cartels made a discovery that would kill 110,000 Americans per year. Mexican Cartels 110,000 Americans per year. But it wasn't a new drug. It was a new business model. For years, cartels had smuggled heroin into the United States. But there was a problem with heroin for them. You needed farms, processing, big trucks. It was bulky. A kilogram of heroin cost roughly $1,878 to make in Mexico. A kilo of heroin cost $6,000 the Sinaloa Cartel nearly $6,000 to produce in Mexico. Then they found something better. And that thing was fentanyl. It was a synthetic opioid. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Synthetic morphine, 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine itself. Then the economics changed entirely. These cartels, they would go and source the chemicals from China, bring them into processing plants in Mexico, and instead of sending $6,000 per kilo to make heroin, they would spend $43 per kilo to make a Fentanyl they would spend $200 per kilo to make a drug called fentanyl. They'd make these pills that looked exactly like the prescription versions that you would get in the United States, and those pills that would cost a dollar to make in Mexico, a pill costing $1 to make sold for $10 or more on American streets, they would sell for $10 a pill on the streets of the U.S.A.. And the reason why fentanyl importation in the United States is basically impossible to stop is this thing called the Iron Law of Prohibition. It's the idea that the harder you prohibit something, the more compact and evolution it happens to make it easier to import. And here's a stat it takes exactly two truckloads of fentanyl to supply the entire United States for a year. And you can't just intercept two pickup trucks. It's too hard. And that is why fentanyl deaths have increased 540% in the United States in just a few years. But those customers and addicts who would buy those pills from the streets, they often had no idea they were taking stuff that was laced with fentanyl. 7 out of 10 counterfeit pills contained a lethal dose. And some of those pills, seven out of ten, were totally sloppily made. A lot of times you would be taking a single pill unaware totally lethal dose. Because of these factors, drug use basically became Russian roulette in the United States, and that's why deaths were about to explode.
