The REAL corporate advice that I would give you as a first gen Harvard grad in tech (Part 1)

If I had a little sister who was starting a new job, I would tell her these key things. Just because they go to work looking any kind of way, that does not mean that you can also do that. Put yourself together. It matters. Do not get drunk at happy hours. These people are not your friends. And do not tell those people your business when they ask you how was your weekend. I don't care if you flew to the South of France. You say, good. I didn't do much. How was yours? You do need to show your face. And you have no reason not to show your face. I don't even drink and I still show my face at a happy hour and sit my Diet Coke. Make friends with people outside of your team. This is going to be your most valuable asset. Always put everything in writing. Maybe you had a water cooler conversation, or maybe you had a one-on-one. Make sure you send the follow-up that's explaining in writing. Oh, I'm so happy that we talked about this. Blah blah blah. Because you're going to need that trail for something. And do not complain to people at work. Do not vent to people at work because those same people will go and tell your boss or tell somebody else what you said. And it's going to be a whole office mess. Just avoid it by minding your business, drinking your water, doing your work, securing your check and going into your amazing, incredible life.
