Manager vs. Leader How to handle someone who keeps calling out at the last minute Like a leader, not a manager. Now, I know this is gonna resonate. So number one is we wanna separate the pattern from the excuse. Right. A manager just says, alright, what's. What's the excuse this time? But a leader addresses it like, I'm. I'm less concerned about today's call out and more concerned about the. The pattern that I'm starting to see. See one call out, that's just an event. But repeated call outs, that becomes a reliability issue. And. And I soften my tone so that there's no defensiveness. Wanna create awareness here. What do you think this pattern is communicating to the rest of the team? And I'm not doing a guilt trip here. I'm wanting to create some awareness. And that leads to number two. We wanna make the impact visible. Manager just puts their foot down, you need to be here. But a leader steps back like, let's zoom out. Let's talk about what happens to the team when they keep having to adjust at the last minute. Attendance isn't just about showing up. It's about being someone that your team can count on. Or becoming a Pebble in their shoe, a thorn in their side that they're constantly having to deal with. How do you think your teammates are affected when this keeps happening? Brian Tracy would say, dependability is the foundation of trust. Brian Tracy would say, dependability is the foundation of trust. Number three is we wanna create commitment moving forward. But a manager just says, well, this can't happen again. But a leader invites them to be part of the problem solving process. Let's talk about what needs to change so that your teammates can count on you. Accountability isn't about promises. No, it's about changing the pattern. What's one commitment that you're willing to make moving forward? If we've got a relay race going on and one runner just doesn't show up, well, we all lose, not just the runner. So whereas a manager might focus on today's absence, and yes, we wanna care for our people, we wanna ask, but when it becomes a pattern, as leaders, we address the pattern, we surface the impact, and then we ask for that commitment that is needed to rebuild trust. And look, leadership is not a title, right? It's a fire. And we have the opportunity to ignite it, not only in ourselves, but in others.
