This is great news for North Carolina. UNC Pembroke is opening the state's first school of optometry. As you probably know, North Carolina is growing at a record rate, one of the fastest growing states in the country. And the state is facing an increasing shortage of eye care providers across the entire state. Actually, when this program was approved back in 2024, 13 of the 100 counties did not even have a practicing optometrist. So the school is expected to open in the fall of 2027. It's housed in Pembroke's brand new $96 million dollar, 74,000 square foot clinical sciences building. So this is great news for UNC Pembroke. It's great news for North Carolina.
