A lot of athletes are underfuelling, not draining in, there could be another step. Let's take a look at his diet from the lens of a sports dietitian. He has to have a salad with every meal. so we make sure we give him those greens. Try to keep everything whole food, knock out as many processed foods as possible. We make our own bread. It's not a sacrifice. To be able to have whole ingredients, just ingredients; just kind of minimizing those variables as much as possible. First, we love that he's not restricting anything, not restricting calories, carbs, gluten, dairy. He hits everything that you want to see in a high quality carbohydrates, high quality protein, and plenty of colorful foods that are rich in fiber. Historically, I see athletes err away from fiber rich foods, worrying that they're going to cause trouble for their digestive tract. They only choose the easy to digest carbs* that are lower in fiber most of the time. While no one's eating salads or beans an hour before training, we do include more of those foods the rest of the day. The reality is when you're eating them consistently, you're feeding your gut microbes well and they're going to adapt and not cause you're digestive trouble when you're eating them before or even morning of a race (within reason, of course). Those same foods are incredibly rich in micronutrients and phytochemical antioxidants, they're going to support energy metabolism, recovery. While I know it's not realistic for most of us to have a private chef that's cooking everything from scratch and traveling with us. What we can take from that increasing our whole plant foods is beneficial for performance.
