While I know the media and social are full of fear, I’m surprised people are still freaking out about cyclospora*. I was cautious early in the investigation by not buying fresh berries or herbs and cooking more veggies than normal. But since iceberg lettuce was called out, it’s been business as usual minus less salad kits… but at this point I’d venture to guess that what’s on shelves is A-OK. As a dietitian and mom, I’m much more concerned about people reducing their produce consumption… and my husband HAD cyclosporiasis 4 years ago. We know how absolutely awful and gross it is. We also already know over 90% of Americans don’t eat enough produce and we don’t need more reasons to for people to skip them. If you’re frustrated and still freaked out, remember the CDC and FDA have had drastic cuts for scientists and food safety oversight. Let your government officials know how you feel… and consider this in November. *If you are or live with someone who is immunocompromised, I totally empathize with your situation. Use whatever caution you feel comfortable with, but please keep buying frozen, canned and dried produce - fruit and veg intake is linked to a healthier immune system! #cyclospora #dietitiantips #foodsafety #eatmoreplants
