I’ve been reading Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome by Dr. Joy DeGruy while on vacation. If trauma can be passed from one generation to the next—not only through stories, but through patterns, adaptations, and ways of surviving—what else have we inherited without realizing it? How much of what we call theology is actually inherited? Because generations before us learned to survive within systems that rewarded fear, silence, performance, and control. Over time, those survival strategies became spiritual assumptions. And eventually, they sounded like the voice of God. This is why I’m passionate about helping believers who desire it, deconstruct harmful theology. Not to dismantle their faith. But to separate God’s character from the beliefs they inherited about God. Because healing isn’t just about recovering from what happened to us. Sometimes it’s about questioning what was handed to us. And discovering that the God we’ve been searching for was never hiding behind fear in the first place.

Generational trauma doesn't just shape our nervous systems. It can shape our image of God. Because generations before us learned to survive within systems that rewarded fear, silence, performance, and control. Over time, those survival strategies became spiritual disciplines. And we inherited them. So when we talk about theology, we're talking about the theology that was passed down to us. And that theology was passed down to us by people who were trying to survive. And so, what we have to do is we have to unpack that theology. We have to unpack the theology that was passed down to us. And we have to ask ourselves, is this theology serving us? Or is this theology holding us back? Because if it's holding us back, then we need to let it go. And we need to create a new theology. A theology that is based on love, and on freedom, and on justice. A theology that is based on the idea that we are all children of God. And that we are all worthy of love and respect. And that we all have the power to create a better world. So, I'm reading this book, Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome by Dr. Joy DeGruy.
