Stop blending like this

If you’re blending your vivids horizontally… you’re probably flattening your color & creating harsh lines without even realizing it. Here’s why. When you apply color in horizontal sections and blend up and down, the color sits in a straight line across the head. Once the hair falls, that horizontal blend stacks on top of itself. Instead of creating movement, it creates a solid band of color. That’s why so many vivid transformations end up looking too harsh. even when the colors themselves are beautiful. Instead, think about applying vivids the same way you would a balayage. Take vertical sections and pull the hair straight out from the head. Now create your highest point of color on the surface of the section. This is where your blend will begin. Rather than blending straight across, feather your color on a diagonal. That angled blend is what creates a gradual transition between shades. When the hair falls back into place, every section overlaps differently. Here’s another tip… Don’t make every section identical. Vary where your highest point starts. Some sections can begin slightly higher, others slightly lower. Just like balayage, that variation keeps the blend from looking repetitive and creates a more organic finish. Color placement is just as important as color choice. Two stylists can use the exact same formulas, but the one who understands placement will always create the more expensive-looking result. Stop thinking about where the colors meet. Start thinking about how the hair is going to move after your client walks out the door.
