I have to be honest, what I saw on my TikTok feed were headed to Nantucket this summer. I was like, shit's about to hit the fan. Stop by. We've got a plentiful amount of vintage baskets in the shop! Stop by. #nantucket. The store is called Four Winds Craft Guild. Happy Sunday! We've got a plentiful amount of vintage baskets in the shop! Stop by. #nantucket. Earlier this summer, I saw this on my feed too. Somebody put up a sign that says no influencers. My favorite Dairy Queen queen has actually commented on this publicly. It's made all the news outlets. She said this sign is anti-feminist. It's basically degrading an entire industry, mostly run by women, drives so much revenue, we know this. The debate isn't about influencers. It's about control. Page brought her extremely successful business to Nantucket this summer. I believe they did a Dairy Boy pop-up. I don't know if it's still going on. Lines around the block. People are complaining. Here's the thing. I've been to Nantucket a couple of times. And we know these things are happening everywhere. They're happening in the Hamptons, but Nantucket is a different beast. First time I went to Nantucket, I felt like I was tripping balls. I say everything is so curated and so perfect. It's like an episode of the Stepford Wives. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever been in my life. I understand why people are obsessed with it. That said, it is a very exclusive place. It's harder to get to than the Hamptons. You can't really buy houses on island. You can't even get an Airbnb. The owners running the ship, they run the ship so tightly that you can only paint your house, I think, one of three colors. And everything's manicured down to the gravel. Naturally, when people start to kind of flood these small places that are very, very exclusive, locals are going to get upset. The reservations are hard to get, they can't find housing, they can't find parking, delicate ecosystems start getting overrun. I see this argument as like, old money, new money situation. Old school Nantucket way of doing things, things have changed. Whereas your family connections, your wealth, your legacy are what brought you to this island. Now, influencers themselves can create status. The question we can ask ourselves is, which one of these people gets to decide which place becomes content? The people who built it, or the people who monetize it? Influencers view the exposure as currency, but locals view attention as a cost. Nantucket's appeal is that it doesn't feel like everywhere else. To the locals, influencer culture is the antithesis of preserving that. It's interesting to me that luxury brands don't need this type of attention. Influencer culture brings. Like to be a place that only if you're in the know, you know about them. Let me know your thoughts. So interesting. Things like this, which make these light ship baskets, I believe these are called 19th century baskets. Last thing they want is Sally from Minnesota coming to their store because she saw it on TikTok. I think they could have said no photos or no videotaping was a choice and they stood ten toes down. Very interesting thing happening. Let me know your thoughts. The fight for control takes Nantucket. It's like, you know, the old money, new money situation. Old school Nantucket way of doing things.
