Right now, you're looking at a post that shows that someone on r/ClaudeAI, the subreddit, found a way to Google users' chats with Claude and other things people made with Claude that they were probably unaware was made public by simply Google searching it. And even the subreddit's own ClaudeBot summarized that people could see a user creating a crypto wallet and exposing their keys, a lawyer asking if they needed to self-report a breach of conduct, someone trying to become a nine-tailed fox, a truly staggering amount of incestuous erotica, some of which was bizarrely "shared by Anthropic." How does this even happen? Like other chatbots, Claude lets people share their conversations with others by creating a publicly accessible link of the chat. People might want to do this to send the full text of a conversation they had with Claude to their friends or coworkers in a group, for example. But they might not realize that Google is also surfacing these links in search results, making them available to essentially anybody. A certain Google dork, which is a super-specific search that is useful for finding particular webpages or files, surfaced Claude's chat to the post. At the time of our writing, the Google dork appears to have been mitigated. Claude also offers Artifacts, which are interactive workspaces for trying out vibe-coded apps or other tools, and when we published this article, the Google dork for surfacing them was still working at the time of our writing. The data exposure is similar to the one that impacted OpenAI's ChatGPT last year, in which nearly 100,000 ChatGPT conversations were searchable on Google. Claude users can change their privacy and sharing settings to make sure their chats are no longer publicly accessible.
