The longer you're unemployed, the harder it is to convince a hiring manager that you're employable. It's documented. A major study sent out 12,000 and candidates who had been unemployed for six months or more got half as many callbacks as those who were equally qualified but still employed. Hiring managers are judging that gap and they're assuming that it means something. It doesn't. Over 25% of Americans have been out of work for more than six months. That's the highest rate since 2021, which means more people than ever are stuck in this bias through no fault of their own. And all of this is happening while the market's working against you. Jolt's data shows hiring rate is at its lowest level in over a decade. And at the same time, internal mobility is up 11% since last year, nearly double that rate. Fewer jobs open, and even fewer of those are available to external candidates right now. So even if you see a job open, it doesn't necessarily mean it's open to you. And researchers who are tracking those ghost jobs are finding that they're just existing to check a compliance box. So what do you say when a hiring manager asks what you've been doing for the last year? You're going to need to cite volunteer work. Not just any volunteer. Take a lead. Take a leadership role. You can chair something. You can chair something and then list it in your experience section. Don't bury it at the bottom. Candidates with volunteer experience are 27% more likely to get than those without it. Non-profit boards are always looking for members. And that's real governance that employers respect. Any courses, certifications, this ties directly back to what companies want right now: skills. And every one of these does the same job. It turns a gap into a chapter with a title. And if you factor in AI screening, which is now used by roughly 90% at some point in their hiring process, many of them have been shown to penalize unexplained gaps. So filling that gap isn't just a talking point for the interview. It's going to get you past that algorithm before you talk to anyone. Share this with anyone who's been applying and hearing nothing in this crazy system of bias and AI. And follow me if you want more on how to answer back.
