One tomoe Sharingan. This is the very first stage of the Sharingan, and the form it takes the moment it awakens in an Uchiha for the first time. A single tomoe appears in the iris, and even at this earliest level, the eye already offers something. Most shinobi spend years trying to develop it. Users gain the ability to read chakra flow, follow fast movement more clearly, and begin memorizing the patterns of techniques they witness. It is not yet a fully realized tool, but it signals that the Uchiha's potential has started to open. Most awakening scenes in the series happen during moments of extreme stress or emotional crisis, which triggers this first stage. At all two tomoe Sharingan as the Sharingan grows stronger, their mental and physical control improves. A second tomoe joins the first. The eye at this level becomes significantly more capable. Genjutsu becomes easier to cast and harder for opponents to detect. Movement prediction sharpens, and the user starts copying techniques with more reliability and speed. Sasuke reached this level fairly early in his development. The difference between one and two tomoe is noticeable in how much more confident and dangerous a user becomes in combat. It is a meaningful step up, not just a visual change. Three tomoe Sharingan. This is the fully matured base form of the Sharingan, and it represents the eye operating at the peak of what this stage can offer. Three tomoe, the user can read lips, predict movement almost before they happen, cast genjutsu through direct eye contact with ease, and copy virtually any non-kekkei genkai technique they observe. Kakashi, despite not being an Uchiha, used his transplanted three tomoe Sharingan to earn the title "Copy Ninja," building a personal library of over a thousand techniques. The full Sharingan is the form most associated with the Uchiha's reputation as a dangerous clan, and it earned that reputation entirely on its own merits. Mangekyo Sharingan. This awakening goes beyond mere maturity and enters a different category of power entirely. It comes at the cost of deep personal loss. The design that appears is visually distinct to the person who awakens it, making each Mangekyo's abilities differ between users. Itachi could trap enemies in a subjective world of torture with a glance using Tsukuyomi, produce inextinguishable black flames with Amaterasu, and summon a full spectral warrior body called Susanoo. Obito could phase through attacks and teleport objects through a personal dimension, Susanoo. Madara also awakened this eye after taking his brother Izuna's eyes. What separates this form from the regular Mangekyo is not just the absence of blindness, but also a raw increase in power and stamina that makes prolonged use far more sustainable. It is essentially the Mangekyo without its one major weakness. Byakugan. This is the inherited eye of the Hyuga clan, one of the oldest known Dojutsu in the Shinobi world. Unlike the Sharingan, it does not awaken through emotional experience. It is simply present from birth in every member of the main family. The veins around the eye become visible when it activates, and the resulting vision extends in nearly every direction with only a small blind spot at the upper neck. They can see through walls, detect targets at great distances, and most importantly, map the body's chakra network in precise detail. The Hyuga built their entire combat system around this last ability. Without the Byakugan, the Gentle Fist style would not exist. Tenseigan. This eye is born from a specific combination of the Hyuga's Byakugan fused with the chakra of Otsutsuki. The result is an eye that glows with a blue-white light and far surpasses what the Byakugan alone can do. Toneri Otsutsuki, who appears in the last film, acquired this eye by taking Hanabi Hyuga's Byakugan and integrating them with his own Otsutsuki chakra. The Tenseigan allows the user to enter a powerful chakra mode and manipulate truth-seeking orbs, which are dense concentrations of all five nature types, combined. It also grants the user the ability to attempt something as extreme as redirecting the moon toward Earth. The eye blends two lineages into something that neither could produce alone. Rinnegan. This eye is described in the series as the most exalted of all ocular abilities, the eye of the Sage of Six Paths, Hagoromo Otsutsuki. It manifests as a pale ringed iris and grants access to the six paths techniques, which cover gravity manipulation, chakra absorption, summoning the King of Hell, and reviving the dead. Nagato used it through six separate bodies simultaneously, each controlling one of the six paths. Madara also developed this eye after becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki. His use of it is brief, but the Rinnegan itself is not a technique that a person trains with. It is simply the mark of a being operating at a level beyond what shinobi are meant to reach. Sasuke Rinnegan. Sasuke's version of the Rinnegan is visually and functionally distinct from Nagato's. Where Nagato's was a straightforward pale ringed iris, Sasuke's carries six tomoe within its rings, granting him access to abilities granted by Hagoromo Otsutsuki after the events of the Fourth Shinobi War. The tomoe indicate that the eye is fully charged and operating at peak capacity. In this state, Sasuke could use Amenotejikara, an ability that lets him swap his position with any nearby object or person instantly. He could also see invisible targets. Rinne Sharingan. This is the primal eye, the one that preceded both the Sharingan and the Rinnegan, as we know them. It belongs to Kaguya Otsutsuki and appears on her forehead as a third eye, presenting as a Rinnegan layered with Sharingan tomoe. It is the source from which both later eye forms eventually descended. Its most significant use is casting the Infinite Tsukuyomi, a planetary scale genjutsu that reflects off the moon's surface and blankets the entire world. Madara also developed this eye after becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki, though his use of it is brief. Ketsuryugan. This is the eye of the Chinoike clan, a family that was persecuted and exiled to a remote location called the Valley of Hell long before the main story takes place. The eye is a vivid red and gives the user control over liquids with a high iron content, which includes blood. At its most powerful, a user can weaponize a target's own blood against them. It also carries genjutsu capabilities, which can be cast through eye contact without warning. The Chinoike were feared enough that the ruling powers of the era found it easier to isolate them than to face them in open conflict. Momoshiki Otsutsuki. Momoshiki Otsutsuki carries two distinct Rinnegan, one in each palm rather than in his eyes, and an additional Rinnegan in the center of his forehead. The palm Rinnegan serve as the output, amplifying and redirecting absorbed techniques back at the user. He essentially turns any attack used against him into a reason not to use ninjutsu. Isshiki's Doujutsu. Isshiki Otsutsuki possesses a unique eye ability known as the Kokugan. His right eye appears as a single small circle, granting him access to two techniques: Sukunahikona, which allows him to shrink himself and non-living objects to microscopic size and store them in a separate dimension, and Daikokuten, which gives him control over that dimension and lets him retrieve stored objects at will. He uses this to make himself invisible by shrinking, and to drop enormous objects on opponents without warning. Eida's Senrigan. This eye belongs to Eida, a cyborg created by Amado. The Senrigan gives Eida the ability to see any event that has occurred in the past or is occurring in the present anywhere in the world with no distance limitations. She can also see the future, but not her own. She cannot see events that have happened before her own birth. These visions come to her involuntarily and with disturbing clarity. She is unable to use her sight to fight or gain tactical advantage in any conventional sense. Urashiki's Rinnegan. Urashiki Otsutsuki carries a pair of light blue Rinnegan that function differently from both Nagato's and Sasuke's versions. His eyes grant him the ability to travel through time, at least in a limited sense, by sending himself backward along a target's timeline, repeating interactions and retaining his own experience of those loops. He also uses his eyes to steal chakra and store it for later use. Ranmaru Doujutsu. This is worth a brief mention as an honorable entry. Ranmaru, a frail child from the Kaguya clan, possesses an unnamed eye that can see through solid objects, detect genjutsu, and channel a form of life force into people near them, temporarily stabilizing them. It was even shown to fool the Byakugan on one occasion. Shion Doujutsu. Shion is a young priestess who appears in the movie Naruto Shippuden the Movie: Bonds. The ability she carries is not combat-oriented in the way most Dojutsu in the series are. Her eye grants her prophetic vision, the ability to see a person's death before it happens. These visions come to her involuntarily and with disturbing clarity. She is unable to use her sight to fight or gain tactical advantage in any conventional sense. She sees ends, not paths, and cannot turn them off. The Jogan from Boruto. This eye belongs to Boruto Uzumaki and is one of the most mysterious Dojutsu introduced in the Boruto series. It appears as a pale, almost featureless eye with a darkened sclera and, unlike most other ocular abilities, it does not activate by choice. It simply manifests when Boruto perceives something that demands it. The Jogan has demonstrated the ability to see chakra flow and to perceive the invisible pathways connecting different dimensions. It can also identify individuals who carry a specific kind of threat, such as members of the Otsutsuki clan. Its full nature and capabilities are still being uncovered.
