I am not a relationship expert, but I've grown to understand that most relationships are destroyed by small habits that continue for so long that eventually, two people who once loved each other slowly become strangers. So here are five mistakes that can destroy a healthy relationship. If you want to save your relationship, please pay close attention. Number one, avoiding difficult conversations. Some people believe that keeping quiet protects their relationship. So instead of saying, I didn't appreciate what you did, they'd rather say, oh, it's fine. Instead of addressing a repeated problem, they choose to ignore it because they don't want an argument. Feelings you refuse to discuss does not disappear. They often become resentment. A healthy relationship is one where two people can have a safe space to discuss difficult conversations. Number two, taking each other for granted. At the beginning, you appreciate the calls, the support, the sacrifices, the little things. But with time, you begin to treat them as normal. Your partner prepares the meals, he checks up on you. She supports you or rearranges her plans just for you, and you barely acknowledge it because you've become used to receiving it. Now, this is what I believe people do not be loved. They also need to know that their love is being noticed. Number three, listening only to defend yourself. Your partner is explaining to you how your actions affected them, instead of you trying to understand, a combative response. So you interrupt them, you explain your intentions, and you also remind them that they also did something similar. For example, your partner says, I feel like you don't make time for me any longer. Your response is, I'm always very busy. At that moment, you are no longer listening to understand, you are listening to win. And when winning becomes more important than understanding each other, the relationship begins to lose. Number four, expecting your partner to read your mind. You became upset because they didn't support you. You expected them to understand why you are quiet, why your mood changed, or what you wanted them to do without clearly communicating it. Then you punish them for failing a test they didn't even know they were taking. Love can make someone attentive, but it does not make them a mind reader. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can say is, this is what I need from you right now. Number five, allowing pride to be more important than the relationship. You know you are wrong, but you refuse to apologize. You know you miss them, but you refuse to be the first to call. You know this argument is going too far to stop because you don't want to appear weak. Now, this is what I've grown to understand. Sometimes relationships end, each other, yet they did not want to put their pride aside. Apologizing does not mean you are weak. Sometimes it means the relationship matters to you more than just a point. So here's an honest question for you. Are you protecting the health of your relationship, or are your habits slowly destroying the very connection you say you value? Just think about this and share this with a brother or sister who deserves to see this. My name is Kwabena Afriyie Akoto-Bamfo, a brotherly advice looking out for you.
