My tips to ace your OBGYN rotation

If I wanted to ace my OBGYN rotation knowing what I know now, these are the things I would do. Number one, I would learn how to use a speculum before my rotation. I would just ask for a speculum and just play with it and learn how to use it to the point where it doesn't make that annoying clicking sound, which actually scares a lot of patients. The second thing I would do is measure my fingers. Most OBGYN residents and physicians have already measured their fingers and that's because we are doing cervical exams. And so we need to know what anywhere from one to 10 centimeters is. And as a student, you may have the opportunity to check a cervix and it would be really impressive if you were like, even somewhat close. The third thing is to bird dog the OR. I've talked about this before, but as a resident, it's so helpful when a student does that because essentially what you're doing is standing outside the patient's room and texting the resident or the attending that hey, the patient is being rolled back to the OR right now because a lot of the times they're busy and they don't have time to sit in front of a computer and see when they're actually in the operating room. Also, always know where the ultrasounds are. Sometimes we need the ultrasound in like a pinch, for example, if the heart tones go down and we need to do a growth or BPP or check someone's fluid levels. We just always need to know where the ultrasounds are at all times. And it's super helpful when the medical student offers to go grab it. I've always found it super helpful when a medical student like automatically grabs the doppler and like the fundal height measurement while I'm taking history. Then we'll just automatically do that and it saves time. Also, always know where the ultrasounds are.
