These are a couple things I wish I knew before applying to med school. 1. Aim for 5 LORs. You need a minimum of 5 letters of recommendation. Two from science faculty, one from an advisor, one from a physician that you shadowed, and one from a supervisor, mentor, or PI. 2. LORs can be submitted later. You can apply to med school without having all your letters of recommendation completed. 3. Secondaries come in rapidly, keep up! Once you start receiving them, you're going to keep receiving them and if you don't tackle them quickly, they will build up. 4. Request LOI early! INTENT =/= INTEREST. Send your letters of intent as soon as you know that you have a dream school, you're getting traction from them, or you've interviewed with them. Send your letter of intent as soon as you can. 5. Demonstrate interest. Schools love demonstrated interest. So if there is a school that's offering an open house, a webinar, or some sort of forum where they're inviting students to come or even learn about the school online, I highly recommend joining. You should not only join but take notes, meet whoever you can, whether it's students or faculty, and try to include that information within your letter of intent. 6. Contact the pre-health office. My last piece of advice is if your school has a pre-health office, reach out to the pre-health office early for help with your personal statement as well as to help with interviewing.
