There's a new way to see inside your body that could replace MRIs, and it only uses water and sound. A typical MRI uses magnets and radio waves to move protons in your body, creating signals the machine turns into images. But with this new machine, you step into a water bath and get lowered at about 5 centimeters per second. Around you is a ring of tiny sensors, each about the size of a grain of sand, that act as both speaker and microphone. They create tiny vibrations that build into one fast sound wave traveling across the tank in one 2000th of a second. As the wave passes through your body, it changes shape depending on what the sensors are firing one by one until they've covered your whole body, capturing 17 gigabytes per second by reading how each wave changes shape, a slice of your insides. It does this again and again as you're lowered through the ring, imaging several hundred in 60 seconds, nearly 100 times faster than an MRI, which could mean more people can actually get scanned.
