Anthropic’s CEO is reportedly worried that young talent is joining the company for the paycheck instead of “the mission.” The mission? Building AI that’s replacing the very jobs those young people were hoping to have. Maybe people aren’t showing up out of pure passion because rent is due. Maybe six-figure salaries are the only way to convince people to spend their days accelerating the automation of human work. Funny how billion-dollar AI companies expect employees to be driven by purpose while the rest of us are expected to accept a future where fewer humans are needed. “Work for the mission” is a lot easier to say when you’re already a billionaire.
