Let’s talk about the cell phone ban…what does it really say?

Kansas passed a law that bans phone use for all public school students in the state of Kansas. But what does the law actually say? The law states that during the entire school day from the time the school day starts to the time the school day ends, students cannot have a phone accessible at all. Accessible means that they could easily reach it and take it out. So that would be like in a pocket or in a backpack. This includes during lunchtime, during bathroom breaks, and during passing time. The only students that are exempt from this law are students that have a 504 plan that explicitly states that they need a cell phone, like for their medical condition, or students that have an IEP that explicitly states that they need a cell phone. Otherwise, no students are exempt. This is going to be a big adjustment for the students, for the teachers, for everybody. I mean, we're all going through this together. The law does not apply to teachers or any other adults in the building. But it is our job to set an example. Like I said, it's going to be an adjustment for everybody. There will probably be some adjustments to my content as well. I do most of my filming before and after school anyway, so I don't know how much will do for that. But I want to set a good example for my students. That's essentially what the law is stating. I would also like to say that like we didn't get here by accident. Yes, this law might sound extreme, but there's a reason why it got to this point. I really look forward to seeing our students blossom socially and just like seeing them, I do think this is going to be a really, really good thing for learning. I'm really excited about that.
