I have been coding for 8 years now and there are two things that I wish I knew when I was starting. Number one is how important GitHub actually is. I never actively pushed projects to my GitHub account until I was in third year. Everything I was doing before that, most of the projects used to live in my laptop. The only thing that helped me stand out is that I already had most of these project hosted on Vercel. But I later on realised after walking into a bunch of interviews and they were asking me, where is your GitHub account? Whenever I show them my GitHub account, they see no activity there. They assume that I never used to write any code. The second important thing that I never did up until probably a year ago was having a portfolio website. Especially for freelance, when you're going to get freelance clients, they will always ask for your portfolio or your portfolio website. This is why you list all the top projects that you've done, the clients that you've dealt with, the case studies that you have. These are things that really help you stand out when you're starting to build a career. If I'd done these a lot sooner, I would have gotten my role a lot sooner, making really good money a lot sooner. If you're someone who is starting, you take these two things seriously. Make sure GitHub is actually active and you have really good projects there. List there. Make sure that these projects are already deployed on Vercel on AWS, demonstrate all of these skills that most like most companies out there look like and also most companies would actually want to see before you get shot an interview. So, make sure you have a portfolio website and at least your top five projects are there.
