If you're in university studying Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT, AI or any tech course, don't make the mistake of thinking your degree is the whole game. Here are 5 things I wish more university students understood early: 1. University is not the real world. Your lecturer can teach you the theory, but the industry will expect you to actually build, solve problems and work with people. 2. Take networking seriously. The people sitting next to you today could become founders, engineers, executives or hiring managers tomorrow. Go to events. Join communities. Talk to people. Build genuine relationships. 3. Don't wait until final year to build skills. Start learning beyond the curriculum while you still have time. Pick a skill, build projects and get comfortable with the tools companies actually use. 4. Build evidence, not just certificates. A GitHub profile, deployed project, internship, freelance project or product you've built can tell someone much more about your ability than another certificate. 5. Start building your career before you graduate. Your first job search shouldn't begin when you take your graduation photos. By then, you should already have projects, experience, relationships and a clear idea of where you're going. University is not something you simply pass through. It's an opportunity to build the person you're going to become after it. Don't wait until graduation to start your career. Start while you're still a student.
