This guy believed that humans can practically absorb languages in their subconscious brain. His name is Stephen Kreshen, and he believed that this part of your brain, which is called the basal ganglia, along with other memory systems, is what subconsciously allows you to obtain new languages. This is called subconscious pattern recognition. I'm going to explain to you why he is correct and why this is the absolute best way to learn a new language. So this is the traditional way that we learn new language. It's through translation. So you learn let's go means vamos. The reason why this sucks is because it's extremely difficult for our brains to memorize these things. All you're doing is going from word to word trying to memorize it. And your brain forgets. Comprehensible input works because it's training your brain to subconsciously pick up on patterns. So not only are you learning the words, you're learning the fillers, the tempo, the ups and the downs. Learning a language the same way you did as your first language when you were a baby growing up. You didn't learn through translation because there was nothing to translate it to. It works and it's how you should be learning languages now. For example, this is the app Plectica, which is an app that teaches Spanish through this method. You're having real native speakers speaking to each other on the screen, speaking to you. Instead of looking at translating bottle, una botella in Spanish, there's going to be a person that uses an object in a sentence, directly referencing the object with the name. When you see the object and you experience, learn the experience, the language through the experience. Versus looking at translating left and right.
