The way you open a 529 can affect how it shows up on FAFSA. A parent-owned 529 is generally counted as a parent asset, which can increase the Student Aid Index. A grandparent-owned 529 is treated differently under the current FAFSA rules and can stay outside that parent-asset calculation.
